Small Business Seminars

Thank you for your interest in attending a North Carolina Department of Revenue Small Business Seminar. The Department is holding a series of seminars focused on proactively informing small business owners of their State tax responsibilities. Past seminar participants have reported that they found the seminars to be very beneficial.

To Register:

  • View the seminars offered.
  • Click the Register button for the seminar location and time you would like to attend.
  • Complete the Registration Form.
  • Check for an email stating that you are successfully registered to attend the seminar or an email stating the event is full. If the email states the event is full, please view the seminar listing to see if you can attend at another location and repeat the registration process.

Current Seminars Offered:

  • Business Essentials (Candler - DOR,SOS; Flat Rock - DOR, SOS; Greenville - DOR, SOS; Spindale - DOR, SOS; Thomasville - DOR, SOS;)

    The NC Department of Revenue, NC Secretary of State, NC Industrial Commission, and NC Department of Commerce Division of Employment Security will present a seminar titled "Business Essentials". Each agency will cover basic requirements to help businesses in North Carolina understand the laws and obligations necessary to be a compliant business.

    Some or all agencies may be present. Please check the list of cities above for the agencies that will be attending.

    Department of Revenue (DOR) – Covers the basics of tax compliance ranging from registering your business, to withholding from employees, and sales and use tax requirements. Information will be provided on a program for businesses that have fallen behind on sales and use, withholding, and other trust taxes.

    Secretary of State (SOS) – Covers registration of business entities and the requirements for doing so. Also will provide an overview of the things small businesses need to consider when conducting securities offering in order to raise capital to finance their businesses.

    Industrial Commission (IC) - Covers Workers' Compensation laws and the types of businesses required to carry workers' compensation insurance and how to obtain it.

    Employment Security (ES) - Covers unemployment insurance laws, employment taxes, and the appeals process.

    At the end of the seminar, there will be a question and answer session with the presenters and networking possibilities with other business owners. Don't miss this great opportunity.
  • Individual Income Tax Law Update (Charlotte)

    The NC Department of Revenue will present a seminar titled "Individual Income Tax Law Update". The NC Department of Revenue will cover the changes made for the 2014 tax year to help individuals who live or work in North Carolina understand the new tax law and changes made to the North Carolina Individual Income tax return.

    Overview of the Seminar: This seminar will focus on the Tax Simplification and Reduction Act (House Bill 998) which was signed into law on July 23, 2013. Under this new law, all taxpayers will be taxed at a lower rate and be granted a higher standard deduction. The Act made significant changes to the individual income tax law for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2014.

    The seminar will also introduce taxpayers to the Individual Income Tax Estimator. Taxpayers can use this tool to calculate the amount of their refund or tax balance due for the 2014 tax year.

    At the end of the seminar, there will be a question and answer session with the presenter. Don't miss this great opportunity.
  • Keys to Success Workshop (Charlotte, Durham, Elizabeth City, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Raleigh, Wilmington, Winston Salem)

    Taxpayers will participate in hands on activities while learning their basic business requirements for the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
  • Nonprofit Claim for Refund Workshop (Durham)

    The NC Department of Revenue will host a workshop for certain nonprofits that qualify for a refund of sales & use taxes paid. The workshop will focus on the step-by-step process for completing the Nonprofit and Governmental Entity Claim for Refund of State and County Sales and Use Taxes.

    This hands-on workshop is intended to help nonprofits better understand the proper procedure for requesting a sales and use tax refund.

    G. S. 105-164.14(b) provides that certain nonprofit entities are allowed semiannual refunds of sales and use taxes they pay on direct purchases and leases of tangible personal property and certain services for use in carrying on the work of the nonprofit entity, other than those exceptions set forth by statute.

  • Tax Implications (Clayton, Durham)

    The NC Department of Revenue will present a seminar titled "Tax Implications". The NC Department of Revenue will cover basic requirements to help North Carolina businesses understand the laws and obligations necessary to be a compliant business.

  • Withholding Small Business Forum (Virtual)

    Description: The NC Department of Revenue, The Internal Revenue Service, and The NC Department of Commerce - Workforce Division will be hosting a webinar to assist small businesses.

    NCDOR: Will share information for entrepreneurs hiring new employees and 2014 NC-4 changes.

    IRS: Will share withholding tax updates relative to the Affordable Care Act


    Department of Commerce: Speak on the work opportunity tax credits avalaible.

    This forum is being presented exclusively online, therefore, registration is required.
