Local Sales and Use Tax Rate Change Coming in Buncombe, Durham, Montgomery and Orange Counties

The local sales and use tax rate in Buncombe, Durham, Montgomery and Orange counties will increase from 2 percent to 2.25 percent effective April 1, 2012. North Carolina counties have the authority to levy an additional 0.25 percent local sales and use tax when voted upon by the residents of the county.
The additional 0.25 percent applies to sales of tangible personal property, certain digital property and other transactions subject to general State rate of sales and use tax. The State rate is 4.75 percent.
The combined state and local rate for the four counties will be 7 percent as of April 1.
Businesses in the county will be notified of the change through a written notice from the Department of Revenue. Detailed information is also available at http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/notices.html.
