Durham County Businessman Arrested in State Tax Case

RALEIGH – A Durham County businessman was arrested Friday on felony and misdemeanor tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Garcia Mike Howard, 62, of 2102 Gilman Street, Durham, the owner of Howard Financial Services, Inc., was charged on November 8, 2013 with four counts of Attempt to Evade or Defeat Tax, two counts of Aid or Assist in the Preparation of Fraudulent Tax Returns, and six counts of Willful Failure to File tax returns.
Arrest warrants allege that Howard understated his personal taxable income for tax years 2007 through 2010, willfully failed to file a 2011 North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return, and, as a responsible person of Howard Financial Services, Inc., aided and abetted the corporation to fail to file 2007 through 2011 corporate income tax returns with the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Additional warrants allege that Howard aided in the preparation of fraudulent 2009 and 2010 North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for a client.
Howard appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under $180,000 secured bond. A first appearance was scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Wake County District Court in Raleigh.
The charges against Howard resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
