Harnett County Woman Charged in State Tax Case

RALEIGH – A Linden woman was arrested on felony tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Shante R. Surles, 23, of 16 Harper Street, Linden was charged on June 26, 2013 with two counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses and two counts of Uttering Forged Instrument.
Arrest warrants allege that Surles filed a false 2009 North Carolina individual income tax return claiming refunds and representing income and withholding from a business for which she never worked. An additional warrant alleges that she filed a 2010 fraudulent North Carolina individual income tax return claiming refunds and representing income and withholding different than that which was reported by her employer. Surles was also charged with two counts of Uttering Forged Instrument in the form of a false Wage and Tax Statement for the same years.
Surles appeared before a Harnett County magistrate and was placed under a $10,000 secured bond. She is scheduled to appear in Wake County District Court in Raleigh on July 22, 2013.The charges against Surles resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
