There is No Fee in North Carolina to Receive a Certificate of Registration
June 23, 2017
The North Carolina Department of Revenue does not charge a fee to obtain a certificate of registration, often called a sales and use or resale tax number. Agency officials recently became aware of private, third-party websites that offer to help taxpayers obtain a certificate of registration for a fee. The advertised fee is $138.
Business owners and taxpayers are advised these types of websites are often misleading. There is no fee to apply for a certificate of registration in North Carolina. The department does not contract this service out to third parties.
