Wake County Business Owner Sentenced for State Tax Charges

RALEIGH – A Wake Forest business owner pleaded guilty recently
to charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Joseph T. Wertis of 8058 Hogan Drive, Wake Forest, pleaded guilty
on March 4, 2004 to nine counts of failure to failure and pay the
state sales and use tax and eight counts of failure to file and pay
the state withholding tax. Wertis is president of Christina Marble
Company Inc.
Judge Jane Gray issued Wertis a 60-day sentence. The sentence was
suspended and Wertis was placed on supervised probation for 48 months.
Wertis was ordered to pay $57,406.16 in restitution to the Department
of Revenue and court costs.
The charges against Wertis are the result of efforts by the Department
of Revenue Raleigh Collections Office.
