Alexander County Business Owner Sentenced on State Tax Charges

An Alexander County woman was sentenced Monday on charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Sarah Mae Smith, 58, of Taylorsville pleaded no contest on Feb. 16, 2009 to one count each of failure to pay the state withholding tax and sales tax. Smith is president of Modern Cleaners of Taylorsville, Inc., located at 270 W. Main St.
District Court Judge James Honeycutt issued Smith a 45-day suspended sentence and placed her on five years supervised probation. Smith must also pay $15,767 in restitution, a $100 fine and court costs.The charges against Smith are the result of efforts by the Department’s Hickory Collections Office.
