Cleveland County Business Owner Guilty of State Tax Charges

A Cleveland County business owner pleaded guilty recently to charges
filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Embeya P. Shembo of 3500 Fallston Road, Shelby, pleaded guilty on
Sept. 8, 2004 to failure to pay the state sales and use tax. Shembo
is the owner and operator of Shembo Community Mart in Shelby.
Judge Charles A. Horn, Sr. issued Shembo 45-day suspended sentence.
Shembo received credit for two days he had already served. The sentence
was suspended and Shembo was placed on unsupervised probation for
one year. He was ordered to pay $2,542.17 in restitution and pay court
costs.
The charges against Shembo are the result of efforts by the Department’s
Hickory Collections Office.
