Gaston County Business Owner Guilty of State Tax Charges

A Gaston County business owner pleaded guilty Thursday to charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Christopher Anthony Smith pleaded guilty on Dec. 12, 2007, to failure to file and pay the state sales tax. Smith is owner of Smith Properties-Shelby Holdings which operates Quiznos restaurants in Shelby and Gastonia.
District Court Judge James A. Jackson issued Smith a 45-day suspended sentence and placed him on supervised probation for 36 months. Smith was also ordered to pay $26,995.09 in restitution.
The charges against Smith are the result of efforts by the Department’s Charlotte Collections Office.
