Watauga County Resident Guilty of State Tax Charges
Date: September 11, 2008
A Watauga County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Jonah David Cumbee of 149 River Bend Road, Sugar Grove, pleaded guilty on Sept. 9, 2008 to one count of failure to file and pay the state withholding, corporate income and corporate franchise, individual income and sales and use taxes. Cumbee was president of the now-closed Farmer’s Backside, a retail sporting goods store specializing in snowboarding supplies located in Boone.
Judge William Leavell issued Cumbee two, consecutive 45-day suspended sentences and placed him on three years supervised probation. Cumbee must also pay $11,226.49 in restitution and any other taxes not yet filed and paid. Court costs were waived.
The charges against Cumbee are the result of efforts by the Department’s Hickory Collections Office.
